Millie Says She Could’ve Seen Herself Working In A Care Home

Millie’s television appearance comes days after the actress admitted she could’ve seen herself going in a completely different career path.

During an appearance on Radio 4's Women's Hour on Monday, the 19-year-old made an intriguing revelation about her career path. She shared this surprising career choice while reflecting on her late grandmother, whose life and experiences served as inspiration for her new book, Nineteen Steps.

After elaborating on how her grandmother's wartime stories had shaped the foundation of her novel, she explained, “A huge passion of mine, if I had not taken the route I have taken, would have been to work in a care home.”

“I love the history of older people and the stories they do tell, even if they are completely made up, which sometimes they are!” Millie continued. “But I hope after reading [Nineteen Steps] you go and talk to your grandparents or you your parents and learn about your family history.”

The actress added that he hopes to one day volunteer in a care home, saying she believes it’s important to be “able to sit there and talk to someone and just being present with someone and hearing them.”

Millie Just Released Her Debut Novel ‘Nineteen Steps’

Though Millie’s grandmother passed away in 2020, she found a special way to honor her when recording the audiobook of her new novel. “So doing the audiobook I was a bit scared of talking it because I'd read it privately so much to myself,” she explained.

“I lit a candle and put her picture in front of me and it was a very emotional few weeks of rehashing all of these stories and also tonally getting how she would tell these stories,” Millie continued.

“When she passed away I really wanted to capture her stories,” Millie went on. “As a child I recorded her and as we went back through those recordings we thought there would be room for a narrative about her life.”

Though this is Millie’s first book, the actress says she’s open to writing more in the future. “I've always loved writing and I've always loved creating,” she commented. “I'm very creative, maybe overly, so my nan had to hang up all the strange things I made!”

“So whatever I do next I will always base it off of very strong women and authentic stories that mean a lot to me and incentivizes me to keep creating things that I'm really passionate about,” she continued.

In her first literary work, the novel Nineteen Steps, Millie weaves a poignant narrative of love, yearning, and grief. This evocative story draws its inspiration from the real-life experiences of her family during World War II. The book is already available on bookshelves.
