Haiti needs our help.

Six years after the catastrophic earthquake ravaged the Caribbean island, Haiti is once again feeling the aftermath of a devastating natural disaster.

Nearly 900 people have been reported dead in Haiti since Hurricane Matthew made landfall last Tuesday (Oct. 4). In addition to the fatalities, thousands have been left homeless, and flooding continues throughout Haiti.

While globally recognized organizations like Doctors Without Borders and UNICEF have mobilized relief efforts, there are lesser-known and local charities in Haiti that shouldn’t be overlooked in the push for donations.

See a list below:

Haiti Communitere was founded after the 2010 earthquake and works with community organizers and organizations to provide “immediate emergency service support” in wake of disasters.

Sakata Haiti is a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for school supplies and uniforms for Haiti’s children.

MADRE  is a global women’s rights organization providing aid in Haiti.

The Lambi Fund of Haiti provides financial resources to “community based organizations” promoting the social and economic empowerment of the Haitian people.”

Art Creation Foundation for Children  buys school supplies, books, tuition, uniforms, registration and covers exam fees for children in Haiti.

Konbit Mizik  uses music to “uplift, educate and empower” Haiti’s youth, and is collecting donations to help victims of the most affected areas.

Although Haiti has been the hardest hit by Hurricane Matthew, the storm ripped through Dominican Republic, Cuba, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the U.S, causing billions in damage .
